SightDrill (package name: com.basarsahin.notedrill) is a piano/music practice app, built by Başar Şahin, that teaches note reading. This page explains what information the app collects, what it's used for, and who it's shared with.
1. Practice mode (offline, no account needed): Note flashcards, answering by microphone/on-screen keyboard/MIDI, themes. This part needs no account or personal information at all, and no data ever leaves your device.
2. Teacher/Student Classroom (uses the internet): Lets a teacher assign homework to students and see the results once a student plays it. This part runs on Google's Firebase platform (Authentication, Firestore database, Hosting). A teacher must sign in (with Google or email/password) to use this part of the app at all; students never need to create an account.
The app can use your microphone to recognize which note you played (an optional mode - you can also play by tapping the on-screen keyboard or connecting a MIDI keyboard). Audio is only ever processed on your device, in real time, purely to detect pitch. No audio is ever recorded, stored, sent off the device, or uploaded to a server.
When a MIDI keyboard/piano is connected, the note data it sends is only exchanged locally between the app and the device. No MIDI data is ever sent over the network.
This information is used only to identify your account and to show your students a welcome message like "You joined [Your Name]'s class". Your email, country, and city are never shown to students or other teachers - the only thing students ever see is your name (and course name, if you set one).
Students are never asked for a real name, email address, phone number, or any other personal information. When a student joins a class:
A teacher can optionally enter a real name/label (e.g. "Elif") for a student in their own private roster, purely as their own memory aid. This label is only ever visible to that one teacher - it is never shown to the student, to any other teacher, or to any third party.
When a student plays an assignment, only a performance summary (correct/wrong/missed note counts, accuracy percentage) is saved so the teacher can see it. Audio, video, or any similar recording is never captured or transmitted.
As the person who builds and operates SightDrill, I (Başar Şahin) have technical access to the Firebase database for the purpose of maintaining the service, fixing bugs, and providing support. This includes teacher account details (email, country/city) and any student labels a teacher has entered in their own private roster. The in-app privacy rules (Firestore security rules) keep this information hidden from other users (other teachers, students) - but as the database's operator, my own technical access isn't limited by those same rules. This data is used solely to run and maintain the service - never for marketing, and never shared with third parties.
No one. There are no ads in the app, no third-party analytics or tracking tools, and no data is ever sold or shared for marketing purposes. The only infrastructure behind the Classroom feature is Google's Firebase (data is hosted on Google's servers, subject to Google's own privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy).
